Supply
Chain Management for Textiles, Apparels, and Garments
Brief
description:
True
just in time (JIT) in textile must apply for the whole value chain.
However today, upstream and downstream operations are poorly coupled
and can take better advantage of the EAN·UCC toolkit as the principles
involved are identical for both upstream and downstream. The management
and control of data originating at downstream must stretch all the
way to the points where raw material is sourced without loss of
information at the various boundaries where value is created.
Efficient supply chain management calls for all parties to abide
by procedures and international standards that are compatible in
both downstream (finished products) and upstream (raw materials,
semi-finished products, etc.) relationships. Inefficiency arising
from loss of information or delays due to the application of national
or proprietary standards as opposed to the international EAN·UCC
standards are costs for all parties that can be well avoided in
this low margin business.
Specific
issues that need to be addressed:
- Harmonised
approach to identifying, tracking and tracing raw material and
semi-finished garments and apparel
- Harmonisation
of EDI standards utilisation for both upstream and downstream
operations - move to UN/EDIFACT messages
- How
to allow SMEs to benefit from EAN·UCC standards (development of
international Web based EDI tools?).

Objectives:
- EAN·UCC
System implementation guidelines for both upstream and downstream
operations (Numbering, barcodes, EDI and web based technologies).
.
- A
working global pilot that illustrates how EAN·UCC standards can
be used across the whole textile and apparel value chain.
- The
establishment of a Global User Forum to promote the methodologies
developed.
- The
development of communication packages, a communications campaign
and a conference.
