RosettaNet
Brief
description
RosettaNet
is the Information Technology (IT) and Electronic Components (EC)
industry standards consortium dedicated to the development and deployment
of electronic commerce partner interfaces to align the business processes
within the IT and EC supply chain industries.
Launched in 1998, RosettaNet is currently in the pilot implementation
which is scheduled to conclude in February 2, 2000 when participants
will link full production systems.
The RosettaNet consortium will implement the Global Trade Item Number
(GTIN) to uniquely identify products and services in the computer
industry. The 14-digit GTIN will facilitate world-wide communication
and e-commerce processes, including full tracking and tracing of inventories,
orders, billing and transportation.
As Fadi Chehade, RosettaNet CEO, noted "Eliminating the use of proprietary
product identification numbers between supply chain partners, which
at the present time change or aggregate as the item moves from manufacturer
to distributor to reseller, will reduce errors, confusion and returns
within distribution channels". (ROSETTANET ADVANCES E-COMMERCE INITIATIVE
FOR SUPPLY CHAIN PROCESS ALIGNMENT WITH ADOPTION OF GTIN STANDARDS,
press release, October 25, 1999, http://www.uc-council.org/news/ne_102699_rosettanet.html)
