Brief

Since
the end of the "Cold War", the Defence sector is under pressure to
reduce costs and improve the efficiency of its operations. As part
of this drive many Defence Departments are recommending the adoption
of commercial standards in logistic and supply processes of the armed
forces. EAN·UCC has been actively supporting the above endeavours
via NATO's logistics projects and CALS (Continuous Acquisition and
Life Cycle Support) initiatives. A formal proposal to examine the
linking (NATO stock numbers) NSN and EAN·UCC was made by NATO officials
during the 8th NATO Codification Symposium held in San
Diego (May 1997). Since then NATO, EAN International and the Uniform
Code Council are working together to make the above happen.
