RFID
Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) is a growing technology that
utilizes radio frequencies to identify product and carry data through
the supply chain. RFID is an essential data carrier that complements
the existing EAN·UCC standard tool set in significant application
areas, including:
- Asset management for returnable transport items and reusable
containers;
- Logistics processes, including tracking and tracing of items
such as perishables;
- Electronic article control for anti-theft tracking programs.
In December 1999, the Global EAN·UCC system RFID Project Team met
in Brussels to adopt a single, common RFID strategy. The need for
this agreement was based on the fact that the RFID market has been
too fragmented and niche-oriented to effectively serve the needs of
the global user community. The EAN·UCC GTAG Program will allow for
both short-term solutions and the timely development of standards
based on identified business process requirements.
RFID represents an important new supply chain technology. It provides
opportunities other data carriers can't deliver.
