Is XML a replacement for EDIFACT?

EAN International does not see XML replacing traditional EDI syntaxes such as UN/EDIFACT. At their lowest levels XML and EDIFACT are simply EDI syntaxes, both of which have significant strengths and significant weaknesses. We believe that the implementation of EDIFACT will continue to grow for the next 5 to 10 years and that XML and EDIFACT will be used as complementing standards during that period.
